Artist Biography

Susana Enríquez, Ph.D,  is an Australian artist born in Mexico City. She arrived in Australia in 2001 as an international PhD student on two postgraduate scholarships from the University of Newcastle. Dr Enríquez studied music, theatre, literature and visual arts at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

In 1982, she lived for six months in West Berlin thanks to an academic exchange scholarship. In 1992, she was invited to exhibit in Paris at the Fresh Paint exhibition, where young Latin American painters were present at the Marcel Duchamp Gallery.

Dr. Enríquez is an interdisciplinary artist with a vast culture and solid technical knowledge in painting and printmaking. She also draws and uses photography to create digital art. She has participated in art and music shows in Mexico and

Australia. She has been a volunteer curator at Newcastle Community Art Center and a contract curator at Newcastle Art Gallery. Since 2016, Susana has been invited to curate temporary documentary exhibitions at the National Arts Library in Mexico City.

From 2007 to 2008, She won an internship at the National Gallery of Australia through ANU in Aboriginal art and curatorial studies.

Since 2018, Dr Enríquez has been developing “Well-being and art” workshops based on Frida Kahlo’s Diary, guiding students with tools to clear and rest the mind, opening their path to full self-expression.

Dr. Enríquez has 30 individual and 45 group exhibitions in Europe, Japan, Argentina, the United States, Mexico and Australia. Her work has been selected for art awards, including several biennials in Mexico. Prominent Mexican critics and artists, including Sasha Grishin in Australia, have featured her work.

It was a strong influence. Much of her work relates directly to him, but most importantly, her extraordinary relationship with music, art and culture has resulted in very diverse professional experiences.

Her insertion into the world of art and other cultures through multiple trips and stays in Europe, Asia and Latin America provided her with substantial knowledge to enrich her work.

Dr. Enríquez’s artwork is in public and private collections in Mexico, Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy, Argentina, and the United States. His paintings have been published twice in the magazine Voices of Mexico of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), ARTisSpectrum of New York, and Hunter Life Style of Newcastle.

As an author, Dr Enríquez published the bilingual edition of his book Migración: Identidad y Memoria in 2021. It was initially only in Spanish and released at the Newcastle Regional Library in 2022.  

In 2024, she collaborated with the Arts National Library in Mexico as curator and artist for an exhibition, concerts, and conversations about the 30th anniversary of Mexican composer Manuel Enriquez’s (1926-1994) departure.
